The rehabilitation of Porto Coliseum marks a new chapter in the history of one of the city’s most emblematic cultural venues. About to turn 85 years old, the building is undergoing the first major intervention in its history, combining infrastructure modernization with the preservation of its architectural and heritage character.

The Architecture and Engineering teams at A400 are participating in this transformation, in a project where each decision requires a balance between the building’s current operational needs and respect for the identity that made it a city landmark.

Modernizing While Preserving the Coliseum’s Identity

The intervention addresses different equipment upgrade needs, particularly in terms of accessibility, energy efficiency, and climate control and HVAC systems, seeking to improve the building’s operating conditions without compromising its historic elements.

In a project with these characteristics, modernizing does not mean replacing. The integration of new technical solutions must be compatible with the existing building and with the elements that define its identity, requiring constant coordination between Architecture and the different Engineering specialties.

The Main Hall Ceiling Under Intervention

Among the ongoing works, the intervention on the Main Hall ceiling stands out, one of the most recognizable elements of Porto Coliseum.

The installation of large-scale scaffolding now allows access to this area for conservation and restoration work, in a particularly demanding operation due to the scale, location, and importance of this element within the architectural ensemble.

The image of the Coliseum’s interior occupied by the scaffolding structure also reveals the scale of an intervention that, despite temporarily transforming the space, aims to preserve what characterizes it.

A400 Architecture and Engineering at Porto Coliseum

A400’s participation brings together Architecture and Engineering in a project where coordination between disciplines is particularly important. The intervention in an existing building with high heritage value requires that new solutions be integrated rigorously and be compatible with the constraints of the original construction.

The rehabilitation of Porto Coliseum thus seeks to prepare the building for new decades of use, improving its performance and functionality while preserving the memory and identity of a space deeply connected to the city.
