The rehabilitation of Cine Teatro Caracas, in Oliveira de Azeméis, constitutes a structural intervention in one of the municipality’s main cultural facilities. The building, originally constructed in 1945 and extensively remodeled in the late 1960s, underwent an operation aimed not only at its technical modernization but, above all, at its functional and cultural revitalization.
The architectural intervention is organized into three main axes: improving technical conditions, enhancing safety and comfort, and creating new cultural spaces. Key changes include the full renovation of the building envelope, with a new roof, reinforced thermal insulation, and replacement of window frames, as well as the introduction of a new metallic “skin” on the facade, giving the building a contemporary and durable image.
From a functional standpoint, the project introduces new spaces on level -1, including a small auditorium, a multipurpose room, and a rehearsal room, allowing for the expansion and diversification of cultural programming. The main auditorium has been fully remodeled, now offering 499 seats, and significant improvements have been made to accessibility, sanitary facilities, and technical areas.
A400 was responsible for the engineering design services, ensuring the integration of the technical solutions necessary for the building’s modernization, including hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical installations, as well as fire safety.
Within the scope of Fire Safety, solutions were implemented that substantially reinforce the building’s protection conditions, namely automatic detection and alarm systems, smoke control, a fire hydrant network, a private water tank and pumping station, as well as fixed extinguishing systems on the stage.
This project represents a clear reinforcement of the technical, functional, and cultural capacity of Cine Teatro Caracas, preparing it to meet contemporary demands for comfort, safety, and programmatic versatility.
